What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
