Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated during his visit to the US capital that the Russian president's move to request talks with Donald Trump indicates the Kremlin is feeling pressure. Zelenskyy commented, "It's evident that Russia is scrambling to resume dialogue as soon as it learns of cruise missiles." This statement referred to earlier comments about supplying advanced weapons to Ukraine.

Diplomatic Moves and International Reactions

An ex- US state department official, a foreign policy expert, observed, "The Russian leader is attempting to derail the momentum toward increased sanctions on Russia." Fried continued, "We'll see on Friday, but the chances of achieving a truce by pushing Russia to get serious seem to have diminished."

The situation followed the US president had recently been strengthening his language toward Moscow until Thursday's call with the Russian president, which the Kremlin described as "extremely frank and constructive."

EU Fuel Restrictions and Market Effects

EU authorities have established a mandate for fuel importers into the EU to prove their products are not made from Russian crude, according to a official guideline released on Thursday. This measure is included in the European Union's upcoming prohibition on imports of fuels processed from Russian petroleum, which is included in its 18th sanctions package against Moscow over its war in Ukraine.

Market analysts noted that trading patterns appeared to be considering the possible reduction of Indian imports of Russian oil. Several Indian refiners are preparing to cut Russian oil imports, with expectations of a gradual decrease, as reported by sources familiar with the situation.

"This represents a favorable turn for the oil market as it would remove a big buyer of Russian crude," said Tony Sycamore, adding that oil prices were stable on the trading day.

Military Situation and Infrastructure Attacks

A large-scale Russian unmanned aircraft and missile attack hit gas facilities in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, resulting in disruptions in eight areas. Authorities in Ukraine stated that Russian forces deployed hundreds of unmanned vehicles and many of projectiles, along with glide bombs.

"This autumn, the Russians use every single day to strike at our power facilities," said Volodymyr Zelenskyy, adding that attacks affected the regions of Chernihiv, eastern Ukraine, Poltava, Sumy and Vinnytsia.

Global Diplomatic Reactions

Ukraine's representative to the United States, the Ukrainian ambassador, asserted that Russia demonstrated its real attitude to peace through the "violence" of such strikes. At the same time, the EU's foreign policy chief, the bloc's representative, announced that the EU had little option but to build up anti-drone defences against Russian threats. She revealed a "roadmap" to get ready for possible conflict by the end of the decade, including a new anti-drone system to be completely functional by the 2027 deadline.

The proposed system, dubbed the "EU defensive program," is expected to begin working initially by the end of 2026 and be fully functioning by the following year. EU authorities aims to secure the backing of EU leaders at a summit next week.
