Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Aggression Provided England's Ace Sets Aside Egotism at the Door.
A single omission did the trick. Another and it might have appeared vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is much too clever not to understand that claiming the World Cup trophy demands help from the talented midfielder, although it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to fit into the tactical structures and team pecking order essential with the national team now that he is returned to the manager's supportive environment.
The manager wants Bellingham's edge, his intensity, but it is a matter of using it appropriately. Skill is important but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is a price to pay when fame dominates. Still, a statement has been delivered.
Bellingham was given food for thought after not being selected of the recent team selection. He watched the national side secure their spot at the tournament in his absence. He watched Morgan Rogers excel as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He listened as the coach discuss appreciating the squad's spirit and ethics. Inevitably, he has responded in champion style, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid against Barcelona and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; leaving him out again would have made his squad place hanging by a thread.
The expectation is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham focused on frightening rivals instead of his own colleagues. After all, on a pure footballing level, there is no value to creating tension with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has shown him that an international career is a precious, uncertain thing. The coach, on his side, can now offer support around the youngster after demonstrating that he is not afraid to drop big names.
“No issue exists regarding him, and no concern with the character,” Tuchel commented. “Jude displays the edge. You need a certain edge to achieve greatness that he reached. We all need to support him and build a atmosphere which he can [have] his drive in matches and in pursuit of success we are building as a team.”
Bellingham dominated most of the attention at the manager's selection reveal for this month’s final group games versus one opponent and Albania. Who else? Well, what about Phil Foden? Here is another prodigious No 10 in need of love and guidance. Foden has been absent for the national team since spring and has struggled to reach his best recently but Tuchel had to consider the 25-year-old after his display in his club's victory against Borussia Dortmund this week.
The question, though, is how to use the attacking talents at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be a good argument to pick another youngster once he is fit after a ongoing injury. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the tournament be too many? Gareth Southgate never found the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, cramping the captain's influence in the process.
It seems unlikely Tuchel making the same mistake if it disrupts the team harmony. There is room for one No 10, with quick attackers on the wings. Clear roles is beneficial. Bellingham is selected as a central attacker. The new call-up, selected for the first time, is a central midfielder and the returning Wharton will compete with another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no position on the wing for the City star, who must play through the middle. The coach prefers him near Kane. “It does not make sense to tell Foden: ‘You are needed in the team but there’s no space in your preferred role, could you fill in at left wing? Can you play right wing?” he stated. “He will play in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I have this fantasy about him for years. I think it suits him best.”
He conceded there are occasions when Foden has not looked himself in an national jersey. “You feel almost like, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has this childish joy to play football, then clearly something is not right, whether it's his role, the setup, it's unclear.
“I think he is also so used to playing for Man City in a particular setup, with a defined role. I think he profits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?
The manager mentioned one star making runs for easy finishes and Foden drilling in strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a extended list of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. A new face is recognized for his fine form for City at left-back. Intrigue abounds.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in this squad. Interestingly, he suggested using the playmaker as a deep-lying striker against Serbia or the other. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are other options should he be absent. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for a little experimentation.
Meanwhile, it is also a chance to get Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham assisting the captain to net in an international match against Scotland in over a year ago to discover the one and only time in 35 games for England when the pair combined for a score. The coach will be aware that the two stars only passed to each other once during the team's ties with one opponent and Slovenia at the Euros. Their partnership is missing.
“At this point eventually it falls to the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel said. He is not afraid to be blunt. There is still a sense of the player having to prove himself. He may not be guaranteed to start against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires Bellingham onside but he will be monitoring him closely. Leave self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an more effective one.
