The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track

This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

All in all, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.

This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by artist the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when cast member the performer added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
