One of the original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated how parent company Unilever blocked the introduction of a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, that established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced that he plans to independently develop the controversial product within a personal collection showcasing issues the company has been prevented from addressing publicly.

Longstanding Conflict Between Founders versus Parent Company

This latest development intensifies the ongoing conflict among the internationally recognized ice cream maker with Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods corporation that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.

The co-founders have claimed that the parent company and their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".

Watermelon Flavor as an Emblem for Solidarity

Mr. Cohen announced through social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions for naming options and potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”

The watermelon has emerged as a symbol for support for Palestinians because of its colors, which mirror the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.

Historical Social Engagement and Current Developments

Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales within the occupied West Bank.

The new product line will be developed under Ben's Best, the activist dessert company that was first created several years back to support ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".

Management Changes plus Upcoming Plans

Mr. Cohen stated how he will create additional ice cream flavors that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to Unilever.

This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following many years of involvement, mentioning concerns that the company's autonomy had been compromised after corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.

Previously, Mr. Cohen commented how "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."

"My heart leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence ensuring that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the principles which established its foundation while upholding for decades," he explained to media outlets.
