The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part season created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The last series concluded in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been widespread ever since, but official word only arrived recently.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a offender.

Yet, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the background, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the news and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the new season will hit screens.

The finale of series six brought the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the corporation announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
