Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is exiting the board at OpenAI, just several days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.
He stated in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the chance to have served, enthusiastic about the promise of the organization, and anticipate following their advancement".
The prominent academic, who once headed Harvard University, announced on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.
Email Communications
The newly public emails showed that Summers communicated with Epstein until the eve of his 2019 detention for accused sex trafficking of young people.
In a separate statement, the AI firm stated it understood the economist's decision to depart.
"We value his numerous inputs and the insight he offered to the Board," the company remarked.
Congressional Action
This announcement comes after the entire Congress of the legislative branch agreed on Tuesday to approve a bill that would require the US justice department to release its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will then move to the desk of President Trump for signature. He has indicated he intends to approve the bill, after reversing his view on the matter following objections from his supporters.
Message Details
A batch of Epstein-connected correspondence disclosed by the Congressional committee days ago included numerous well-known personalities in the billionaire's past associates, without implying any criminal activity by those people.
The messages showed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often trying to connect Summers to influential global figures.
Personal Response
After the emails were shared with the general audience, Summers stated he accepted "full responsibility for my ill-advised choice to persist in interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he wanted "to rebuild confidence and mend bonds with the individuals most important to me".
Professional History
The professor occupied senior posts under Democratic administrations; serving as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.
He headed the university from 2001 to 2006 and remains a academic there. When announcing his withdrawal from public roles previously on this week, he said he would continue his teaching commitments.
Further Repercussions
Following Summers' declaration on Monday, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning policy institute in DC where the professor was a senior fellow, verified that he was ceased to be connected with the institution.
He entered the directorate of OpenAI, which makes the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to remove its top executive the company leader.
