Ghostface OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Spoil the Franchise with Scream 7.
The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a major family reunion. This new chapter marks the legendary return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters returning to the fray.
"Returning to a character you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.
A Triumphant Return for Fallen Characters
It has been established that three distinct characters from past films are set to return in this new outing, even though dying in prior movies. The precise method of their return remains a mystery. Audiences should prepare for the reappearance of the beloved and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a small appearance is a dream come true, even if he is terrified about the audience response. The performer vividly recalls the exact moment he got the news from the original writer.
"I recall the phone call. I remember the small talk. I recall him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he states. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the decades since the original film was released, which made Lillard feeling very nervous.
"The reality is, that's a role that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now embodied in every single Ghostface mask that appears every Halloween."
The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fans
Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the final product. He confesses to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular franchise.
"The outcome is either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I have no idea if the film will be successful. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the franchise. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Abound
While countless dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's reappearance, the central mystery of how he and the others come back remains. Perhaps they exist as manifestations in Sidney's mind, similar to a prior storyline. Or, maybe they are in some way still living in a strange shared scenario. The chance of a self-referential story, inspired by earlier horror movies, also exists.
Audiences will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
