Three police officers perished and at least 15 people got wounded in what appears to be intentional blast caused by gas at a country home in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The blast took place as police and firefighters entered the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to execute an removal notice for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three deceased individuals served in the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female were taken into custody at the scene and another man who ran away subsequent to the explosion was apprehended soon after. The trio have been taken to hospital.

The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the location displayed the structure left as a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to evict the three siblings in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto region, the regional head, explained the farmhouse was under an eviction order due to financial obligations accrued by the siblings.

Negotiators had been assigned to engage the family members who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the residents set off the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander the police commander informed reporters.

A propane tank had been activated, and the explosion immediately struck our personnel,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the residence, the Interior Minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the explosion included an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three officers of national police and a fire services member.

According to the local prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

He thought the explosion had taken place on a story above the access point and informed journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the incident, he said members had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents informed local news, noting that the trio had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto joined other government officials in commemorating the trio of personnel who had died in the service of their country.
