‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: The striker’s road from rehabilitation to scoring with Athletic Bilbao

The first time Gorka Guruzeta featured in England, an young representing the reserve team against German opponents at the English ground in fall 2015, he found the net. On his next visit he appeared in the country, against Sunderland weeks after, he scored. Another occasion, against Manchester City not long later, well, he did it once more. Upon his comeback to Manchester to play against the Red Devils at the sports complex in the 2017 season, he found the back of the net. It was a superb volley, also. “Truly,” he states, “it’s one of the best goals in my career.” Thus the club did what they had to do: he was replaced.

“I was furious,” the attacker reveals, and then he starts laughing. “There must be a video somewhere. Our match against United and I performed well. They kept me out of the second half: my contract wasn’t finalized my contract, goals were flowing, many stories circulated, it’s typical. I don’t know about Newcastle being interested, but I came across reports about the Red Devils, standard transfer gossip. I have no idea if it was accurate, but supposing an offer came, my desire was to remain at Athletic. I’m fortunate to be here.”

Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other

At the training ground, the Basque Country, the morning session is set to begin; post-session, the quick travel to Loiu and another trip to England, on this occasion to take on the Magpies in the Champions League on Wednesday. Uttering the name makes Guruzeta smile. This is proving a tough year for the team, partially owing to the requirements of being here. Beaten in added time in the local rivalry, they have managed just one win of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and the German side in Europe. Yet, take in the big picture, the big nights he has lived and upcoming events, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation from him.

In the the period since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a final four contender in Europe, stopped at the gates the showpiece event by United, and has ridden an historic vessel up the Nervión estuary accompanied by countless supporters after lifting the trophy, the first title in four decades. Now he is the club’s leading marksman in the UCL, where they are unique and debuting in a long period. “This was beyond my dreams,” he admits.

Guruzeta thought it hard enough just to break into the senior squad and he was right. As the child of the ex-La Real star Xabi Guruzeta and a regular attendee at the team he now opposes, Guruzeta is a graduate of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that developed the coach, the legendary midfielder and the tactician. He signed for Athletic at his teens but after his first-team bow in that summer, he experienced a serious knee problem, being released, a relegation and a recall before he could truly get a chance, making his comeback to enjoy the highlights of their lives.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta aims to take on Newcastle in the European competition.

“Joining the setup doubting you’ll make the first team but each step you advance through you’re remaining and you can see it getting closer. You arrive and then … you have to leave.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in a handful of matches between his debut and that period. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches at that level and I suffered the ACL injury.

“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it forced me to alter the perspective. Healing from a serious ailment is hard, but it helps. You adopt practices previously lacking. Previously I was casual, but I would go to training and then return home, as a youngster does. At Lezama, all resources are available, so utilize it all. Work, precaution. Strength training. If your hips aren’t balanced, address that. With decent ankle function, enhance it further. Every small aspect: perform them.

“At the top level you’re going to face physical challenges who have crashed into players repeatedly. Highly robust. Seeing previous pictures: my physique was slight. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Teammates are set, really ready; the same applies.”

Minutes are crucial. The striker moved in tears in 2020, aged 23, dropping into the second division. With Sabadell in 2020-21, he scored three times in 40 games. At Amorebieta in the following period, the goals started to flow. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. With a turnaround, effort, faith, and if one day the requirement appears where you play, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, European football, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

Understandably he remarks savor the moment. Especially after the prior campaign which, at times, was about endurance. After being leading scorer with a high tally, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
