Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
