Aaron Rai Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Play-Off Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a dramatic play-off following a topsy-turvy last day of play.
Rai sank a crucial birdie putt from just over eight feet to seal the win, echoing his only previous tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a playoff victory against the same opponent.
Final Round Excitement
Rai entered the last day with a single stroke lead over countryman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, 67 final round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
The challenger moved one shot ahead with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final hole.
Play-Off Climax
That led to a playoff at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to take the title and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13m) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even better individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” said the winner, the present world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the moment how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Other Contenders
Rory McIlroy found himself just too much to make up, coming up one shot behind in a tie for third with the Dane, after a spectacular 62 final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever round on the DP World Tour, including eight birdie putts and an eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of topping the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent last round seven-under to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
